Harz – nature and culture all around the Brocken
At the point where Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia converge, you will find the highest mountain range in North Germany – the Harz.
Dense areas of mixed woodland, mountain spruce trees and primeval forest, deep valleys, streams and mountain lakes, as well as bizarre rock formations, invite you to explore and discover the varied delights of this stunning natural scenery. The Harz National Park, with the jewel in its crown – the Brocken – offers numerous hiking and cycling tours, all against an unforgettable natural backdrop.
Fascinating museum tours are available at Schloss Wernigerode® castle, which sits overlooking the town, guaranteeing a stunning view. The narrow-gauge railway departs from Wernigerode and climbs up onto the Brocken. At a height of 1,141 metres, it is the highest mountain in the Harz range and in the Saxony-Anhalt region.
Wenigerode, known as the ‘colourful town in the Harz’ is situated on the edge of this idyllic natural landscape. The winding streets of the old town are home to numerous historic half-timbered buildings, featuring magnificent, colourfully painted carvings. The town hall, the market place and the Travel Charme Gothische Haus are particular gems.
The ‘crooked house’, a former fulling mill, and the ‘smallest house’, with a living area of just 8 m2, are just a few of the impressive historic buildings worth visiting.
Our tip: go on an exciting tour of the old town at twilight with a night watchman to hear and enjoy mystical stories and experiences from a bygone era. The area has numerous sights and attractions to offer – you can’t fail to be enchanted and have a wonderful time in the mystical Harz.
